Paula Abdul is an award winning singer and choreographer, jewelry designer and inspiration. Paula began studying dance at the age of eight and was inspired by such performers as Gene Kelly, Debbie Allen, Fred Astaire, and Bob Fosse. She received a scholarship to a dance camp at the age of 15. While attending California State University, Paula tried out to join the cheerleading squad for the Los Angeles Lakers NBA team and was selected from a pool of 700. Within three months, she became head choreographer. She created a DVD fitness series in 2005 called Cardio Cheer that is marketed to children and teenage girls involved with cheerleading and dance. She also runs dance and cheerleading camps, competitions, and scholarship programs throughout the country.
She became one of the most sought-after choreographers at the height of the music video era. Her credits include movies such as Big, Coming to America, The Doors, and American Beauty, as well as working with such artists as Janet Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and the late Luther Vandross. She received an Emmy® nomination for choreographing the Academy Awards®. One of her favorite career memories is being able to dance alongside her idol, Gene Kelly, in a Diet Coke commercial thanks to the wonders of technology.
In 1998, Paula released her first Pop-R&B album, which spent 10 weeks at number one. This album went on to produce four number one singles, and was the only album at that time to do so. In 2002, Paula became one of the celebrity judges on American Idol, and is called the “heart and soul” of the show for the encouragement she gives to the hopeful singers.
Paula was presented with the Profiles In Living Award in 2005 due to her public service announcements and involvement with the National Eating Disorders Association.
